The Dolomite Mountain area has been a very popular vacation destination for ages. North Europeans in particular have often gravitated to this part of Italy as it offers climatic condistions that are unavailable in the north of Europe, yet maintains a culture and mentality distinct from southern Italy. The great composer Gustav Mahler, actually, vacationed in the South Tyrol, which is not far from Cortina d'Ampezzo.
