San Marco Square is an unavoidable destination for anyone on vacation in Venice. One of the most frequently visited places in Italy, San Marco Square is constantly bustling-- with tourists as well as pigeons. Beware: our sources say the human head and shoulder are two of a Venetian pigeon's favorite landing surfaces. The square serves as a marketplace for florists and jewelers; it's wonderful a place to pick up a souvenir. Take a moment to stand along the waterfront and watch the vaperetto, water taxis (motoscaffi) and gondolas make their way gracefully through the Grand Canal. Shoppers needn't leave the square-- stores line the sides-- and a host of gelletaria and outdoor cafes await you. Don't be alarmed if a quartet sets up beside your table to sing a few folk songs or play some Rossini. Palazzo Ducale, one of the most sought after sights in Venice, is also on San Marco Square. Of course the most famous destination in this part of town is San Marco’s Cathedral. The red brick bell-tower... [research building] The famous Danieli hotel is just a short walk from the square. Guests there are treated to the chime of San Marco’s Cathedral's bells marking time all through the day and night.
