Castel Saint Angelo

Hadrian's Mausoleum

Castel Sant Angelo sits along the Tiber River near the Vatican City. Throughout its long life this building has served many purposes. Originally built as a mausoleum by Emperor Hadrian, this building has since served as a fortress, as well as the papal residence. A secret corridor called the Passetto di Borgo connected the Castel Sant Angelo with the Vatican. Today this historic building, which is named for the angel mounted on top of it, is a museum.
