Santa Maria Novella

Santa Maria Novella is one of the most important locations in Florence history and culture. Once occupied by the enormous congregation of the Domenican order in the Renaissance, the square even had to be widened at times to accommodate the masses. Construction on the church in the square began in 1221, at which time the Domenican order obtained ownership of the area comprising the basilica and the equally famous square. Leon Battista Alberti designed the facade, which is considered one of the most singular triumphs of the Italian Renaissance. Masaccio's "Trinity" is inside-- also a Renaissance masterpiece.
