The Duomo or dome of the Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore elegantly dominates the skyline of Florence. Located just north of Piazza della Signoria the cathedral was, at the time it was built, the largest in Europe. With room for more than thirty-thousand it is today still exceeded only by Saint Paul’s Cathedral in London, Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City, the Milan Cathedral and the Seville Cathedral. Construction began in 1296 and continued for 170 years.
