The Basilica di Santa Croce is the principal Franciscan church in Florence. Construction began in 1294 and the Basilica was consecrated in 1442 by Pope Eugene IV. This amazing structure is the largest Franciscan church in the world, featuring sixteen chapels. Many of the interior walls are decorated with frescoes by Giotto. The Basilica di Santa Croce is the final resting place for many famous Italians including Michelangelo, Leon Battista Alberti, and Galileo.
