The Pitti Palace or Palazzo was built in the 15th century and occupied by the Medici family after they came to power. The building was expanded several times by the Medici family and between 1550 1558 Boboli Gardens were designed on the hillside behind the Pitti Palazzo. Today Pitti Palace is the home of several important museums including the Paltine Gallery, the Gallery of Modern Art, the Silver Museum, the Porcelain Museum, and the Costume Gallery.
