Accademia Gallery is one of Florence’s major sightseeing attractions. Here you will find a collection of important Florentine paintings from the 13th to the 18th century. The Accademia Gallery is best known as the home of Michelangelo’s David. This statue was moved here in 1873. Michelangelo’s David has become symbolic of the city of Florence and the Renaissance period. The Accademia Gallery also houses Michelangelo’s Captives which was intended for the tomb of Pope Julius II, as well as Giambologna’s original works in plaster.
