Nuraghi Stones

Nuraghi is the name for the ancient stone structures found throughout Sardinia. These structures date back almost four thousand years, and are believed to be the dwellings of an ancient civilization. Not much is known of the origin of these structures though almost seven thousand fairly well preserved examples still dot the Sardinian landscape. The nuraghi are simple conical shapes built by layering large stones in a pattern that narrows with each level. The weight and positioning of these stones is what holds the structure in place as mortar was not used.
