Chiesa Stella di Maris Catholic Church

Chiesa Stella di Maris is a one of the most famous attractions in Costa Smeralda, Sardegna’s luxury resort area on the Northeast coast. “Stella Maris” or “Star of the Sea” is a term that refers to the Virgin Mary of the Catholic Church as a spiritual guide for those making their living on the ocean, either as fisherman or as seafarers. This church of the mariner community offers stunning views of the Porto Cervo Yacht Club and the shining sapphire blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Designed by the master architect Michele Busiri-Vici in the 1960’s, its modern attitude is achieved by a harmonization of architectural vision with the area's natural characteristics. The prominence of organic elements, combined with muted, earthy colors and a tile roof typical of this part of Italy, the structure is as humble and subtle as it is dazzling. White washed stone walls and gentle, curvilinear lines describe a comforting, quiet space intended for devotion. The church itself is fragrant, again in an organic way, thanks to the scent of the Juniper wood used to make its furnishings. Perhaps the most impressive interior feature is the painting Mater Dolorosa by the Spanish master El Greco, which hangs in a niche of the church. The painting itself draws visitors from around the world. Busiri-Vici designed many of the other buildings of Costa Smeralda, such as the famous Hotel Romazzino, whose design includes Mediterranean elements similar to those observed in Busiri-Vici's work. Hotel Romazzino is especially recommended for those families traveling with children. An unforgettable day could be spent visiting the church in the morning, then having a lunch of fresh seafood or homegrown pasta in any one of the nearby restaurants. Costa Smeralda hosts a number of wine merchants eager to give you a taste of the delicious wines produced in Sardegna.
