The Accademia, as it is commonly referred to, was founded in 1750 and intended to be the city's school of art and engineering. Today it functions as a museum of 18th century art. Giovanni Battista Piazzetta was the first man to be elected president of the Accademia. Piazzetta is still respected for such works as _St. James Led to Martyrdom_, _Madonna and child appearing to St. Philip Neri_ and _The Soothsayer_, and these works have been preserved and put on display in various parts of Venice. Late in his life, after gaining a great deal of fame for his own works, Piazzetta turned to teaching. In 1807 The Accademia came to be known as the Accademia Reale di Belle Arti, at which time it was moved to its current location.
